GeoSpectrum Technologies (GTI) announces it will supply the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (University of California San Diego) with two “C-BASS” low frequency sources.

GeoSpectrum awarded contract for the supply of Low Frequency Underwater SourcesThis new technology will allow researchers to conduct low frequency acoustic experiments more efficiently and less expensively than previously possible. A successful field trial at Seneca Lake last December caught the attention of Scripps, resulting in the purchase.

The fully coherent C-BASS are tuned to operate at 34 Hz and are capable of continuous operation. The energy efficient sources are physically compact at 38″ (1m) diameter and 9″ (23cm) thick. They will be delivered along with the control systems and amplifiers required to support autonomous moorings and manual deployments.

The C-BASS electrodynamic transducer is a flexible family with a variety of available sizes all the way down to man-portable 12″ and 9″ diameter units. With resonant frequencies as low as 15Hz and operating bands reaching above 1KHz, GTI continues to expand the C-BASS family capabilities. These efficient transducers are light weight, moderately priced, and capable of being deployed in a wide range of configurations.

Paul Yeatman, President of GTI, commented: “During developments on this project the company fabricated sources for long range underwater acoustic communication. There are plans to extend the product line to provide a wide range of frequencies.”
